📜 History of PIN Code

The PIN code system was introduced in India on 15th August 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar, then Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Communications.

The system was created to cope with the challenges of manual sorting and delivery of mail in a country with diverse languages and similar place names.

Initially, there were only 8 PIN regions. Today, there are 9 PIN regions covering all 28 states and 8 union territories of India.

The system has evolved to serve over 1.5 lakh post offices across the country.
